Homemade Macaroni & Cheese - The perfect comfort food for cold winter evenings!

Homemade Macaroni & Cheese

Cold winter days are one of my favorite times to make this classic main dish, macaroni and cheese.

This simple, no-fuss recipe comes together quickly and only takes 30 minutes in the oven. And it makes great leftovers too!

Recipe: Macaroni & Cheese

INGREDIENTS
2 cups elbow macaroni
2 cups (approximately) shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup all-purpose flour
3-4 Tbsp butter or margarine
Salt and pepper to taste
1-2 cups of milk

DIRECTIONS
Cook elbow macaroni according to package directions. Drain and allow to cool.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a casserole dish with cooking spray or butter.

Assemble the macaroni and cheese in layers, in this order:

  • Place 1/3 of the cooked macaroni in the prepared casserole dish
  • Sprinkle 1/3 cup flour over macaroni.
  • Chop 1 Tbsp butter (or more if desired) into small chunks, place on top of flour.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Spread 1/3 of the shredded cheese over this.

Repeat these layers two more times, in this order.

When you have finished layering the ingredients, slowly pour the milk over the entire mixture, allowing it to seep through the layers. Start with one cup of milk, then add more milk as needed. The milk should be visible at the bottom of the dish, but don’t drown it.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Remove from oven, stir to mix the layers. Add a bit more milk as you stir, if you want more sauce. Serve warm. Makes great leftovers!
